Procedure D.2. Drawing the Knot

  1. Create equilateral triangle with Star Tool with 60 px radius.
  2. Convert to path (Path icon Object to Path ( Shift+Ctrl+C )).
  3. Remove nodes in middle of sides using Node Tool.
  4. Drag handle out from top node (Shift+Left Mouse Drag).
  5. Convert node to symmetric node (click on icon in Tool Controls).
  6. Drag handle while holding down Control key to ensure handle is horizontal until handle is 60 px from node (monitor Notification Region).
  7. Repeat dragging out handles for other two nodes.
    Knot 1.
    Left: Equilateral triangle. Middle: One handle extended. Right: Completed curve.
  8. Add Stroke with width of 12.5 px.
  9. Duplicate, remove one node with Node Tool, open Path by selecting segment and deleting ( icon ). Change Stroke color.
  10. Repeat for two other sections.
    Knot 2.
    Left: Stroke widened. Middle: One section created. Right: All three sections created..
  11. Duplicate red section; use to divide green section (Path icon Division ( Ctrl+/ )).
  12. Duplicate larger green section; use to divide blue section.
  13. Duplicate larger blue section; use to divide red section.
  14. Delete small overlapping regions.
  15. Recombine sections as shown below (Path icon Combine ( Ctrl+K )).
    Knot 1.
    Left: Broken into pieces. Middle: Small intersecting sections removed. Right: Pieces combined into three sections.
  16. Add gradients using Gradient Tool.
    Knot 4.
    Final knot after gradients added.
